Top Tips when purchasing a pram, pushchair, buggy or stroller

1. When purchasing a pram, rather than focusing on the price, focus on the build quality and your child's comfort.

2. A complete travel system might be in order. These tend to be more expensive but they do last longer. A complete travel system allows you to integrate your car seat with your pushchair allowing you to plug in your car seat with child into his or her pushchair without disturbing your child during the process - ideal when they are asleep!

3. Buy a pram considering the future growth of your child. If you want any kind of value for money you should be looking to be able to use it for at least 3 to 4 months.

4. Buy a pram with an adjustable hood which you can use to optimise the sunlight reaching your baby. If the hood is too big, you will not be able to even see what your baby is doing. If the hood cover is too small, then it is as good as not having one.

5. Some studies claim that newborns benefit more when they are facing the parent while inside a pram as this provides them comfort and also improves their communication skills. On the other hand the same studies concluded that toddlers' brains are stimulated more when they can see the outside world. In this respect, baby pushchairs with reversible seats may be a superior choice.

6. If you'll be using public transport you'll be better off with something that is extremely easy to fold and unfold even with one hand. It makes a world of difference especially when you're carrying things or when you're in a hurry.

7. If the pushchair is for a newborn, it needs to be able to allow your baby to lie completely flat on his/her back as this promotes spinal development. If the pushchair is for a toddler who can sit upright on his/her own, then you may still want a pushchair with suitable reclining seat positions.

8. The adjustability of the handle bar matters. If your height varies greatly from your partner's, buying a pushchair with adjustable handle height is a must. If you're both the same height, then it shouldn't really matter.

9. How much stuff will you be carrying with you on a regular basis? If you'll be using the pram, buggy or pushchair on public transportation, then you'll need an easy to use model with a big shopping basket.

10. Where you live might also affect your purchasing decision. If you live in a place that will require you to carry the pushchair or buggy up and down stairs a lot then you might want to go for a lightweight model.

11. Another important aspect to note is the quality of the wheels used. Please note that the standards of quality for the wheel are also as important as that of the body. As a general guideline, if you are buying a pram, pushchair or buggy made of good quality materials, both the wheels and body will be good. The manufacturers will not be foolish enough to put inferior quality wheels with superior quality body.

12. Manoeuvrability is a key consideration. Make sure that it functions well when turning it to your left or right, or backwards and forwards. You need to make sure you will have no problem steering it.

13. It is a very good idea to take a test drive without your baby.

14. Look at the wheels - are they too big? Look at its size when folded - will it fit in your car boot? Look at all the accessories that come with the pushchair as well. Will they all fit in your available storage space?

15. It's not just a question of whether they will all fit in your car boot and store cupboard at home. Will it also fit through doors, hallways and supermarket checkouts?

16. When you have purchased your pram, pushchair, buggy or stroller safety should always be your number one concern from day to day. This means that items should have a safety harness. The safest is the 5-point type. To ensure that your baby does not slide from his/her belt, a crotch strap must be present. It also prevents your baby from getting out of the stroller.

17. Strap your child in at all times. If you use the safety harness from the very start your child will have no problems with being secured in this way as they grow.

18. Brakes are vital. There will be times when you find yourself on slopes/inclines. Therefore, make sure that the brakes are working and in good condition at all times.

19. Also, for foldable items, check the locking mechanism. Try to put your baby inside and ensure that it does not collapse easily.

20. Some modern pushchairs, especially jogging models, have options for removable wheels. For these you will need to ensure that the wheels are fully secure before venturing outside.
